To create a new dataset, select the command Database | New Database from the DMS Monthly Calendar Menu.

If you have permission to create a database from the database administrator:

1. DMS will then display the following screen:

       

       

2. Enter the new dataset name.  The dataset name must be unique.  Dashes, underscores, and special characters will be removed by DMS to create the database name.  Care should be taken so that two datasets do not create the same database name.  For example, do NOT create two datasets with names like Test_Data and Test Data as they will result in the same database name.  Instead, you could use names like Test Data 1 and Test Data 2.  In actual practice it is best to use meaningful names like "Prototype Shop", "Machine Shop", etc.

3. Each dataset you create can have a color associated with it.  You can select a color for the "Dataset status bar color" or take the default color.

4. You will notice that "Create sample data" is unchecked.  If you want DMS to create sample resource with sample resource profiles, check "Create sample data".

5. Click OK to create the dataset and DMS creates the dataset. 

6. After the dataset has been created, DMS will ask you to login to the newly database.  The user name and password for newly created datasets/databases is dms and dms.

If you DO NOT have permission to create a database from the database administrator:

1. DMS will then display the following screen:

    

2. Enter the new dataset name.  The dataset name must be unique. 

3. Enter the existing database name.  The database must be created for you by your database administrator.  If you are unsure of the database name, check with your database administrator.

4. Each dataset you create can have a color associated with it.  You can select a color for the "Dataset status bar color" or take the default color.

5. You will notice that "Create sample data" is unchecked.  If you want DMS to create sample resource with sample resource profiles, check "Create sample data".

6. Click OK to create the necessary structure in the database for the dataset.

7. After the dataset has been created, DMS will ask you to login to the newly database.  The user name and password for newly created datasets/databases is dms and dms.

The example below shows what the main calendar screen looks like if you selected the color cyan for the dataset status bar color:

If you are opening multiple datasets on one computer, or switch between datasets a lot you may find it helpful to color code your datasets.
