The Variable tab on the report designer is located at the top right side of the designer.  When you click on this tab, you will see the DMS calculated variables as well as system variables (such as Date, time, etc.) that are available for this report.  What type of DMS calculated variables appear will depend on the DMS Report Type.  For example, a report type of Jobs will have job calculated variables and operation calculated variables, but not capacity variables.

You add a variable to your report by dragging the variable onto a data band.
